Monad of the Month - SE3367 - South of Ripon City Wetlands
Welcome to Monad of the Month! This series will feature a monad (1km) grid square within the North and East Yorkshire area where we’re lacking records in our database. We’ve chosen grid squares that lack records but also contain interesting or valuable habitats or (locally or nationally/internationally) designated sites, and that are close to large towns, cities, or transport links where possible, to make them accessible, should you wish to visit and do some recording!
Our Monad of the Month for November 2025 is SE3367, located south of Ripon City Wetlands.
SE3367 is located towards the south-east of Ripon, comprising part of the grassland south of the Ripon City Wetlands Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Reserve, part of Ripon Canal as it meets the River Ure, arable farmland, and grassland, as well as part of Givendale Lake. The hectad borders the boundary of the Ripon Canal Local Wildlife Site (or SINC).
Currently SE3367 has only six records associated with it, of four taxonomic groups - flowering plant, amphibian, odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), and bird. All of these records, aside from two records of dragonflies, have been recorded at a 10km resolution, whereas the dragonfly records lie on the boundary, or close to, Ripon Canal SINC site.
The main area of interest would be the canal and the wetland areas surrounding it, as well as the River Ouse and its banks. There are footpaths alongside the canal and river on the south side, running from Ripon Canal SINC south-east across the entire square. There are some cuts and becks which intercept this pathway, passable via small bridges. There are also pockets of shrubs and trees.
Please ensure any land you record on is openly accessible or has access granted to you.
